WHAT TO DO IN BYRON BAY

Byron Bay Lighthouse Walk

Ballina Byron Transfers

A trip to Byron Bay isn’t complete without walking up to the Lighthouse! It literally is a “must see”. This beautifully maintained lighthouse is iconic of Byron Bay, sitting perched high on the headland overlooking the bay. Built in 1901 by Charles Harding, it stands on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland and is Australia’s most powerful lighthouse after being converted to mains electricity in 1956.

To begin, walk up to main beach and start heading towards the lighthouse. After a gentle 20 min stroll, you can stop for a coffee at the Clarkes Beach Café, then carry on another 10 mins until you reach The Pass – a world famous surf spot. Here you can walk up the steps to the lookout and watch the surfers in action.

From The Pass head off the beach and up and over a headland to Wategos Beach then continue the trek up to the lighthouse, walking through a conservation park to reach the most easterly point of Australia.  Just a few more steps and you have made it to the icon of Byron Bay. Take some time to look inside the lighthouse, soak up some history, buy some souvenirs, or just relax with an ice-cream as you soak up the spectacular view.

From the lighthouse you can see the whole of the township, bay and mountains.  Look the other way and you can see down to Tallows, Broken Head and Lennox Head in the distance. If you are in Byron Bay during winter you will hopefully witness the humpback whales migrating and you can see pods of dolphins all year round. Whatever the time of year, the lighthouse walk is amazing, regardless of what you may or may not see in the water.

WHITES BEACH

Byron Bay Transfers

The Best Kept Beach Secret (in Australia!)

The secluded Whites Beach located at Broken Head just south of Byron Bay, makes you feel like you’re a million miles from anywhere, washed up on an Island paradise. Named Australia’s number one secret destination in Australian Traveller magazine’s 100 Incredible Travel Secrets of Australia, Whites Beach is well known to locals but due to its isolated location isn’t really on the tourists hit list due to the drive along the dirt Seven Mile Beach Rd, no parking and the sometimes difficult to negotiate access track. Stunning ocean views and vistas as you walk down to a beautiful secluded beach make it all worthwhile though.

This hidden gem of a beach is fringed with sub-tropical rain forest and shady pandanus palms thriving along the rocky coastline.  As it’s a bit of a steep decent to the beach don’t bring loads of stuff you won’t need, with no shops or supplies to be had nearby, make sure you bring some water, a picnic and sunscreen. Should you choose the adventure of it all, you will surely be rewarded with a beautiful day out at what has to be the most fabulous beach by a long shot. Enjoy!
